Thursday was dumping down with snow throughout the day with the freezing level hovering around Morzine village level.

Over 18 inches of fresh snow fell on much of the mountain so I jumped at the chance of ‘ski hosting’ with a guest. Here is a very rough edit of some of the video from Friday…..

I managed to get up on to the mountain this morning under the guise of hosting/guiding. After a very wet day yesterday, powder wasn’t considered an option today.

Fortunately, we were very wrong indeed.

Here is Jack (a guest) storming through the powder in the Crozat bowl far away from the pistes (and the crowds) in Avoriaz …

Here at Custom Breaks we appreciate that skiing and snowboarding are expensive hobbies, and factors such as the price of a lift pass are an important consideration when choosing a resort. We often have guests “commenting” on the price of their lift passes and we usually reply with “compared to other ski resorts it’s actually quite cheap”. I had heard somebody else say this once but this year we have decided to find out exactly how true this is.

We have researched and compared several of the larger European ski domains taking into consideration the size of the area, the number of lifts and the number of pistes. This is what we found:

Les Portes du Soleil including Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets & Chatel
€216 adult
€162 child
650km piste, 286 runs, 210 lifts, 9 parks

The Three Valleys including Meribel, Couchevel & Val Thorens
€240 adult
€177 child
600km piste, 300 runs, 183 lifts, 7 parks

Chamonix All Areas
€255 adult
€217 child
400km piste, 262 runs, 100 lifts, 2 parks

Espace Killy including Val d’Isere & Tignes

300km piste, 154 runs, 90 lifts, 2 parks

Paradiski including La Plagne, Peisey-Vallandry & Les Arcs

Well, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that out of all of the areas we researched the Portes du Soleil lift pass is not only the cheapest but also offers the largest ski area, the most lifts and the greatest number of parks! Although these are not the only factors to consider when choosing a ski holiday we think it is a good start!!

We had a fantastic time at Chalet Alice, this was our first time skiing in Europe and James and Frances made it extra special for us. If all chalet hosts are as good as them then catered chalets are the way to go!!!

Lovely is an understatement …

Lovely is an understatement, but that’s the word that kept springing to mind from the moment we arrived until we left. Special mention to Frances and James for their hospitality. It felt more like we were staying with friends at their own home than a holiday let.

Hospitality was second to none …

We had an absolutely fantastic week at Chalet Alice with our friends. The chalet was great and the food too. James and Frances’s hospitality was second to none. Nothing was too much for them. They were more like our friends than our hosts!! Thanks so much for making our holiday an extra special one!!

This was our first catered chalet & it was fantastic. Thanks to Milly, Robin, James and Francis & Jim. The chalet was perfect & the food was superb. Jim was a great guide on the slopes and well worth spending a day with. We all had a great time, thanks.
